ARTiculate Our Rights: Rules and conditions

We invited students from all over Manitoba to imagine the future for human rights and how these rights will impact people’s lives. 

The submission deadline has passed. This page describes the submission rules and conditions for future reference.

Submission and exhibition dates

The submission deadline was January 31, 2020.

The Museum, in partnership with Manitoba 150, will present the ARTiculate Our Rights outdoor exhibition at the Forks starting in late spring of 2020. The Museum plans to display additional entries in its Expressions gallery on Level 6 from Summer 2020 through Spring 2021.

Criteria for submissions

Who is eligible for ARTiculate Our Rights?*

  • Students ages 13 to 19 (at the time of submission)
  • Students under the age of 18 must submit a parent/legal guardian consent form with their online submission. 
  • Individual or group submissions welcome
  • Must be residents of Manitoba
  • Must be original artworks that reflect a youth perspective on the topic of human rights in the future
  • Original artworks can be created in any medium except film or video but must be submitted in the form of a high‐quality digital photograph.

*Publishers, galleries, agents and collectors are not eligible to submit entries.

What do I need to submit?

  • The submission must include a short, written description about the artwork and how it fits the theme (maximum 100 words) 

Digital images of the artworks:

  • Can be a maximum dimension of 17 inches wide by 12 inches tall at 300 dpi (the higher the resolution, the better the image will appear when reproduced in a large‐scale format)
  • Must have a horizontal orientation (meaning that it is wider than it is tall). 
  • Must be submitted as JPG, JPEG, TIFF, PDF or EPS
  • Must be no larger than 400 MB
  • Must include the student’s first and last name in the file name (e.g.: johndoe_studentwork.jpg)

Submissions that do not meet these technical requirements will be disqualified. 

Who retains the rights to the artwork?

The students and/or groups of students will retain the rights to the artwork. However, submitting an entry grants the Museum a license to use the artwork in perpetuity. 

By submitting, the student(s) confirm and acknowledge that: 

  • The artwork being submitted is their own original work and is not a reproduction of someone else’s work;
  • The Museum is granted worldwide, perpetual, royalty‐free, irrevocable, and non‐exclusive right and license to use, copy, adapt, transmit, publicly display, distribute, and create derivative works of the student(s) work and personal information (including name, age and city/town of residence) in any and all manner and media whatsoever, for the administration of ARTiculate Our Rights or any publicity carried out by the Museum and its marketing or fundraising partners; and
  • The Museum will not be required to pay any additional consideration, including but not limited to, artist fees or exhibition rights fees, or to seek any additional approval in connection with the above uses.

Wherever possible, any use of the artwork by the Museum will include a credit to the student(s) which will include the student’s name, age and city/town of residence.
