Ottawa –The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) joins the Rwanda High Commission to Canada and the All‐Party Parliamentary Group for the Prevention of Genocide and other Crimes Against Humanity today in Ottawa to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide, the brutal massacre of over a million people.

Genocide survivor Chantal Mudahogora of Hamilton, Ontario will also make remarks, along with Alain Ntwali, president of the Humura Association (a Canadian group formed by survivors).

A Kwibuka20 flame will be lit at the event. Kwibuka means "remember" in Kinyarwanda, Rwanda's official language. The official Kwibuka20 flame, lit in Kigali on January 7, is now travelling around Rwanda and will return to that nation's capital on April 7, the date the massacre began in 1994.

Kwibuka20 is a time for everyone, wherever they are and whatever their age, to come together and learn about the importance of human rights. The CMHR is committed to encouraging reflection and dialogue on human rights. Stories about the Rwandan genocide will be featured in the Museum when it opens in Winnipeg on Sept. 20, 2014 as Canada's new national museum.
