A series of information sessions for interested candidates begins today at the Museum. Several sessions will be offered in French. A schedule is attached below.

"This is an exciting time for the Museum and the entire community," said Denise Bukowski, the CMHR's Volunteer Services Manager. "Volunteers will help us create inspiring encounters with human rights for thousands of visitors to Canada's new national museum—the world's only museum dedicated to the concept of human rights itself."

Different types of volunteer roles (see below) have been identified to help with CMHR inauguration and beyond, ranging from frontline goodwill ambassadors and educational workshop assistants to staff support behind the scenes. Candidates must be prepared to make a commitment of four to six hours a week for a six‐month period. They will be assessed through a careful screening process.

"Our volunteer program will be built on the strengths of a reliable, enthusiastic team of people with a generosity of spirit and a commitment to human rights. We're trying to build a team that represents diverse backgrounds, age groups and abilities, who share our values of respect, integrity, service and excellence."

In return, volunteers will have the opportunity to be part of a once‐in‐a‐lifetime project, contribute to human rights education, acquire new skills and build new relationships.

The CMHR is the first museum in the world solely dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights. It is the first national museum in Canada to be built outside the National Capital Region. Using multimedia technology and other innovative approaches, the Museum will create inspiring encounters with human rights in a visitor experience unlike any other.

CMHR volunteer roles
CMHR Volunteer Ambassadors: Recruitment opens spring 2014. These are signature volunteers and goodwill ambassadors for our Museum. They work throughout the Museum, helping to deliver an exceptional visitor experience that is inclusive, respectful and service‐driven. They work with staff from various departments to help visitors with museum content, wayfinding and technology questions.
Public Programming Volunteers: Recruitment opens spring 2014.These are volunteers who like meeting people of all ages, talking to them and helping them out. Their role is to engage visitors and to promote meaningful learning experiences. They help staff to deliver educational and public programming.
Special Events Volunteers: Recruitment opens spring 2014.These are friendly, social people. They work with staff to host all kinds of special events and programs at the Museum—an exhibit opening, perhaps, a ticketed special event, or special behind‐the‐scenes tours. They may serve refreshments, greet guests, or help set up or take down props for an event.
Behind‐the‐Scenes Volunteers: Recruitment opens spring 2014.These are busy, efficient people who don't mind working behind the scenes to support to staff in administration or with special projects. Their tasks include preparing mass mail‐outs and unpacking or pricing inventory for our gift shop.

Membership Services Volunteers: Recruitment opens spring 2014.These volunteers are service‐oriented. They work behind the scenes with staff to deliver exceptional customer service and to help with membership initiatives and drives.
Education Program Workshop Volunteers: Recruitment opens fall 2014.These volunteers like to work with children and youth. They help to deliver first‐rate learning experiences at the Museum, where they work with staff and teachers to deliver student programming and tours.
National Student Program Volunteers: Recruitment opens fall 2015.These volunteers are looking beyond Canada's horizons. They work with staff to deliver educational programming to people from around the world. They contribute to a unique international program and help the Museum to keep its promise—"to create inspiring encounters with human rights."
Seasonal Programming Volunteers: Recruitment opens spring 2015.These volunteers help us to engage with youth. They work with staff to provide learning opportunities around human rights and to deliver seasonal (winter, spring break and summer) educational programming. The volunteers help with classroom management and the delivery of learning tools.
