August 1 marks Emancipation Day in Canada, commemorating the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, which came into effect in 1834 and brought legal freedom to more than 800,000 enslaved Africans and their descendants across the British colonies, including what is now Canada. In Manitoba, the day holds particular significance: The Emancipation Day Act (Bill 232), introduced by MLA Jamie Moses and given Royal Assent in 2021, officially proclaims August 1 as Emancipation Day across the province, affirming the heritage and ongoing contributions of Manitobans of African descent.

In partnership with Black History Manitoba, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights is hosting a celebration to mark this day — bringing together community members, cultural organizations, educators and youth to honour Black history and Black excellence, and to inspire future generations.

Doors open at 6 p.m., with the program beginning at 7 p.m. The evening features spoken word, music and reflection, alongside remarks from community leaders and government representatives. Highlights include a welcome from host Natalie Bell, greetings from Black History Manitoba and African Communities of Manitoba Inc., a vocal performance, the short film The Black Canadian Town You've Never Heard Of , remarks from guest speaker Angela Cassie of the Michaëlle Jean Foundation, and closing remarks from Black History Manitoba Chair Nadia Thompson. The program closes with a crowd drumming session led by Jay Stoller of Drum Café, and is expected to run until approximately 9:30 p.m.
