Join us for the opening of At the Knees of Our Ancestors, a new exhibit examining the history of enslavement and early Black life in Canada. The exhibit marks the first phase of a larger, ongoing initiative, the Ancestors Project.

Canada’s participation in the transatlantic slave trade, and its devastating impact on both African and Indigenous peoples, is often marginalized in public memory. Through objects, documents and oral histories, this exhibit brings these histories into focus, revealing the lives of the first Black individuals and communities who shaped the country’s early social fabric. The exhibit’s design draws inspiration from the “family home,” a space of care, preservation and memory.

The event begins at 2 p.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to view the exhibit and enjoy food, beverages and live musical performances. The formal program includes remarks from exhibit curator Alia Aluma, along with other Museum and community representatives.

There is no cost to attend, but registration is required.
