News release details
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights' 2012–13 Annual Report was tabled today in the House of Commons.
Titled Poised to reflect the Museum's readiness to open its doors to the world next September, the report highlights major achievements from the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013 including:
- Completion of all major exterior building elements, culminating with the installation of the last of 1,700 custom‐cut panes of glass in September 2012.
- Tendering and awarding all remaining exhibit design and construction contracts, ensuring that all major exhibits are now in development to ensure readiness for the Museum's opening in 2014.
- Major operational milestones including development of building management, staffing and operations plans and completion of audio/visual hardware installation and integration.
- More national and international partnerships including a joint initiative with the 200,000-member Canadian Teachers' Federation to create a first‐ever human rights learning toolkit for Canada's educators.
- Additional opportunities for Canadians to learn about their new museum, including an expanded annual public meeting and expansion of the CMHR's popular summer perimeter tour program, allowing the Museum to welcome over 1,500 visitors during its busiest summer yet.
- National recognition for the Museum's commitment to universally accessible design, including an announcement with the Council of Canadians with Disabilities and the Ontario College of Art and Design's Inclusive Design Research Centre to declare that the CMHR would set not only a new Canadian but global standard for accessibility and inclusion.
- Engaging an independent project director to ensure all project benchmarks and budgets continue to be met in the lead‐up to 2014.
The Museum's annual report contains full audited financial statements. Consistent with previous years' projections, the Museum remains on track to complete all building construction and inaugural galleries and exhibits within its approved budget.
On Monday, Nov. 4, joined by its tourism and business partners, the Museum publicly announced Sept. 20, 2014 as its official opening date. The Museum will provide regular updates on inauguration‐year programming as well as membership and admissions information over the coming months.
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is the first museum in the world solely dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights. It is the first national museum in Canada to be built outside the National Capital Region.
