The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) will mark International Human Rights Day, December 10, with free admission for all visitors.

The Museum is also offering special free daytime events on December 10 and December 11:

Screening of The Water Walker, December 10

At 15 years old, Autumn Peltier, the Anishinabek Nation chief water commissioner, had already spent half of her life fighting for water. Motivated by stories of children growing up without access to drinkable tap water and elders forced to walk every day to claim water rations, Autumn embarked on a mission to bring clean drinking water to Indigenous communities across Canada.

Directed by James Burns, The Water Walker follows her journey from Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory, on Manitoulin Island, to the United Nations General Assembly in New York City as she fights for the rights of Indigenous communities across Canada.

The screening will begin at 1:30 p.m. After the film, activist, land defender and educator Layla Staats will join Elder Robert Greene of Shoal Lake 39 First Nation and Museum curator Isabelle Masson in a conversation about Autumn’s journey, the devastating impacts of water advisories and climate change action across Canada.

Ethiopian coffee ceremony led by Negash Coffee, December 10

The Ethiopian coffee ceremony is a sign of respect, a way to welcome people and build bonds of community and friendship.

Negash Coffee, a family‐owned roastery in Niverville that supplies the Museum’s Cloud Coffee café, will lead the ceremony. They will roast raw coffee beans, grind them and make fresh coffee, all while guiding visitors through the process step‐by‐step.

The ceremony will run from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m. Visitors are welcome to come and go throughout the ceremony. Negash will also have bags of ground and whole‐bean coffee available for purchase.

Esprit de Choeur choir performances, December 11

Since 2011, this vibrant Winnipeg‐based choir has been creating joyous, imaginative and captivating performances.

Join them for performances at 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. in Bonnie & John Buhler Hall. Performances will be in both French and English and will be free with admission (regular admission rates will apply on December 11).
