News release details

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) will mark International Human Rights Day, Tuesday, December 10, with free admission and programming for all visitors all day from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

International Human Rights Day celebrates the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, at the United Nations on December 10, 1948. The declaration sets out the inherent human rights that belong to everyone, and that must be advanced and protected everywhere. It is the most translated document in the world and is now available in 577 languages.

Activities to mark Human Rights Day

See activities page.

Interactive human rights timeline (11 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

What are human rights? That is the question posed to visitors as they enter the Museum’s first gallery, which contains a timeline of key moments in human rights history. On Human Rights Day, the Museum will ask visitors to display their thoughts on what events, ideas, movements and people they want to add to the timeline.

Join a free walking tour exploring Art + Human Rights (1 p.m. – 3 p.m.)

This two‐hour tour is a collaboration between National Gallery of Canada, The Forks and the CMHR. It will be hosted by curators and interpreters of both institutions, as well as local artists Jaime Black Morsette, Val Vint, KC Adams and Jamie Isaac. The tour will highlight key installations throughout the grounds of The Forks as well as inside the Museum, and explore how art can share human rights stories, reflect the importance of place and call for action. Free with registration.

Take a self‐guided “Art and Human Rights” tour (10 a.m. – 5 p.m.)

Art is a powerful way to convey human rights stories. A new self‐guided tour will lead visitors on an exploration of some of the extraordinary works of art in the Museum.

Congratulate new citizens of Canada (2:15 p.m. – 4 p.m.):

In a moving ceremony, over 70 individuals will be welcomed as new citizens of Canada – an event that embodies the spirit of community. Visitors are encouraged to join this momentous occasion to applaud the new citizens. Space will be limited.

$10 off a Museum membership

The CMHR is offering a $10 discount on the purchase of a new membership or a renewal, only on December 10th.
