A colourful artisan marketplace, featuring handmade products from women's cooperatives around the world, comes to life this weekend at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR).
Empowering Women: Artisan Cooperatives that Transform Communities – the market provides an opportunity for visitors to support the efforts of women whose work furthers human rights for themselves, their families and their communities.
CMHR Boutique staff worked with the non‐profit organization Ten Thousand Villages to source ethical, fair‐trade artisan products from Bangladesh, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Nepal, Peru and Swaziland. Women's cooperatives from several of these nations are showcased in the exhibition, which officially opens Saturday in the Level 6 Expressions gallery.

Where: Bonnie & John Buhler Hall, CMHR, 85 Israel Asper Way
On July 23, a weaving demonstration will also be given in the Level 6 gallery by two Indigenous Maya women from TRAMA textiles cooperative in Guatemala, who have travelled to Winnipeg for the exhibition's opening. Woven items from their own cooperative (featured in a virtual reality experience in the exhibition) will also be on sale at the marketplace and in the Museum's Boutique. The demonstrations run from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
All the products featured in the marketplace will continue to be available for sale in the CMHR Boutique into the future. They include arts such as embroidered, beaded and hand‐dyed fabrics, beaded jewelry and weavings.
