News release details
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights' (CMHR) annual corporate plan summary has been tabled in the House of Commons and can now be viewed on the Museum's website.
The corporate plan summary –– an annual legislated requirement of each of Canada's national museums –– documents the organization's key planning and budgetary priorities for the next five years.
The CMHR's 2013–14 corporate plan summary sets out benchmarks and objectives to guide the transition from construction site to inauguration and beyond. The plan spans the lead‐up to the Museum's official opening in September 2014 and its initial years of regular operations.
Seven "key corporate results" outlined in the plan address areas of particular focus to ensure the organization is well‐positioned for success after the doors open next year. With strategic plans now established to ensure the building and inaugural exhibits are completed within approved budgetary benchmarks, the Museum's corporate priorities now become more firmly oriented toward inauguration and operations, with greater focus in areas such as visitor experience, public outreach, corporate management and earned revenue.
The 2013–14 corporate plan summary commits the Museum to continued diligence in ensuring that total project costs leading up to the September opening remain within the $351‐million approved project budget. The Museum continues to work with an external project manager to ensure that all construction, exhibit, programming and budgetary benchmarks are independently monitored to ensure they are being met.
Key priorities identified in the plan for the next two years include an inaugural opening that will meet Canadians' expectations; a national effort to engage Canadians across the country with Museum programs and activities; and ongoing efforts to maximize cost savings, strengthen productivity and identify efficiencies wherever possible.
The Museum's summary corporate plans include an overview of both current and projected organizational finances. The CMHR also provides quarterly financial statements on its web site and publishes audited financials each year in its annual report. Project spending remains within the Museum's approved budgetary allocation.
The CMHR publicly confirmed September 20, 2014 as its official opening date earlier this month. The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is the first museum in the world solely dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights. It is the first national museum in Canada to be built outside the National Capital Region.
