A new documentary that addresses violence against Indigenous women, girls and Two‐Spirit people will premiere on Wednesday, December 6, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, at Dave Barber Cinematheque.

IKWEWI – She is a Woman, produced by the Clan Mothers Healing Village, examines the colonial, patriarchal systems that have led to appallingly high rates of sexual violence, exploitation and trafficking. In the documentary, three Elders share how ancestral Indigenous knowledge can help women gain back their power and security.

The Clan Mothers created the documentary to examine perspectives on sexuality, the historical context in which systemic degradation and violence occur, and the powerful role women can play in both prevention and healing, says Krista Anderson, an event organizer.

The December 6 event runs 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and will include a discussion with Elder Mae Louise Campbell and Elder Belinda Vandenbroek, both of whom are featured in IKWEWI. The audience will be invited to ask questions. 

The premiere happens within the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender‐based Violence from November 25 to December 10. This one‐night‐only screening is part of a larger campaign by the Clan Mothers Healing Village to highlight awareness and prevention strategies.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is proud to partner with Dave Barber Cinematheque and the Clan Mothers Healing Village on this screening of IKWEWI as part of our ongoing Human Rights Through Film series.
