News release details

The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced the appointment of Eric Hughes as Chairperson of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights Board of Trustees for a three‐year term.

"I am confident that Mr. Hughes' experience in financial and operational leadership and his expertise in corporate governance will continue to serve the Board well as the Canadian Museum for Human Rights proceeds through the building stage to full operations," said Minister Moore.

Mr. Hughes was first appointed as Vice‐Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights on June 19, 2009, for a four‐year term. He has been the interim Chairperson since December 31, 2011.

Mr. Hughes has been Chief Financial Officer of Coral Hill Energy Ltd. since 2009. Prior to this, he was Chief Financial Officer of Wave Energy Ltd. (2008–2009), Neteller PLC (2003–2008), and BURNCO Rock Products (1999–2002). Mr. Hughes is actively involved in community activities for youth sports. He is a Chartered Accountant and holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Calgary.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights has the mandate to explore the subject of human rights—with special but not exclusive reference to Canada—in order to enhance the public's understanding of human rights, to promote respect for others, and to encourage reflection and dialogue. Located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, it is the first national museum to be constructed outside the National Capital Region.
