Saranaz Barforoush, Ph. D. (she/her) is an Iranian Canadian journalist and Assistant Professor of Teaching at the UBC School of Journalism, Writing, and Media (JWAM). Dr. Barforoush is the creator and coordinator of the Journalism and Social Change minor, launched by JWAM in 2023. With over a decade of reporting experience in Tehran, Dr. Barforoush covered a wide range of topics, including technology, new media, protests and gender issues. Her ongoing research focuses on the ethics and best practices in reporting on vulnerable communities, information disorder and journalism, solutions journalism, and journalism education.

Information Disorder in Times of Conflict

The distortion of facts doesn’t just blur the truth — it shapes how the world sees a conflict, downplaying real suffering and making it easier to see others as “the enemy.” Disinformation is a direct threat to human rights. We see examples of this weapon of war taking a toll in conflicts today.
