Childhood denied

This online story examines the history, impact and legacy of the Canadian Indian Residential School System. From the 1880s to the 1990s, over 150,000 First Nations, Inuit and Métis children were torn from their families and sent to Indian residential schools, often located far from their homes. Many students suffered neglect and abuse. Thousands of children died.
