Pride vs. Prejudice: The Delwin Vriend Story

Experience Vriend’s historic pursuit of justice and 2SLGBTQI+ rights

September 21, 2025

A man wearing a light blue shirt sits at a long table in front of a cluster of microphones, smiling. Seated on both sides of him are other people dressed in suits and facing microphones, also smiling. The name placards along the front of the table read, from left to right, “Murray Billet”, “Robinson Koilpillai”, and “Dr George Rodgers”, with too-blurry-to-read affiliations below the names. Another placard, knocked on its side, reads “Delwin Vriend” without an affiliation. Partially obscured.

Delwin Vriend never wanted to be a human rights activist. But in challenging his firing for being gay, he set in motion a chain of events that impacted the lives of 2SLGBTQI+ people everywhere.

Pride vs. Prejudice: The Delwin Vriend Story delves into the riveting Vriend v. Alberta court case, where Delwin Vriend courageously battled discrimination from a government determined to deny his human rights. Uncover the twists and turns that unfold as Vriend's pursuit of justice challenges the biases of some Canadians, culminating in a groundbreaking 1998 ruling by the Supreme Court of Canada that set a transformative precedent for 2SLGBTQI+ rights.

Produced by the Edmonton Community Foundation and the Edmonton Queer History Project, Pride vs. Prejudice is a story of resilience, human rights and social change.

Join us after the film for a panel talk with the film’s writer/director, Darrin Hagen.
