Education is widely accepted as a fundamental human right around the world. Despite this, less than 50% of care‐experienced Canadians will complete high school and less than 10% will complete post‐secondary education.
“This lack of completed education sets this population of Canadians up for worse health, social and economic outcomes across the life course as compared to those without care‐experience. Black, Indigenous, and queer youth remain overrepresented in the limited available national data. Equally noteworthy is the fact that although Canada is a signatory on numerous international human rights declarations, including the UN Declaration on the Rights of the Child, we continue to see significant disparities facing care‐experienced youth, including in the area of education. ”
We believe this display will help us raise awareness about the importance of access to and completion of education among those with care experience to a wider audience, including those who have never thought about the unique human rights challenges facing care‐experienced youth in Canada.
We hope those who see this display will feel compelled to take action and motivate themselves and others to make the long overdue societal changes a reality for care‐experienced children and youth.
About the Atlantic Tuition Waiver Project
The Atlantic Tuition Waiver Project is made up of a diverse research team based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. We aim to create awareness about the unique barriers to education former youth in care experience in Canada. Our team includes researchers, policy analysts, current students, former youth in care, and government and community representatives. This three‐year project was funded by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Partnership Development Grant.
