Museum offers free admission on Canada Day

Galleries and special programs share important stories of rights in Canada

The museum's Canadian Journeys gallery, seen from the perspective of a visitor standing in the middle of it, surrounded by niches that share stories of Canadian experiences of human rights. On the walls above the niches, large images of faces of Canadian human rights defenders are seen arranged in a grid pattern. Partially obscured.

News release details

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) will mark Canada Day with free admission this Saturday, July 1.

All are welcome to explore our galleries and important stories of rights in Canada. Discover the impact of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms alongside Viola Desmond’s inspiring act of resistance against segregation in Canada. Witness testimony from residential school survivors while learning about the struggle for voting rights in Canada.

In‐gallery programming will be led by Knowledge Keeper Marilyn Dykstra (she/her). Throughout the weekend, she will offer a free workshop called Project of Heart, a hands‐on activity that shares the history of residential schools.

An activity that highlights the connections between human rights and comic books will also be offered. Visitors can explore comic books about iconic figures such as Louis Riel and Nelson Mandela, as well as the award‐winning series A Girl Called Echo, by Katherena Vermette. Then, they can draw their own short comic strip about human rights themes of their choice.

A special poutine menu will be offered starting on Friday and available throughout the weekend. The Museum’s patio, tucked under the trees with shade and soft seating, will be open throughout the weekend for folks to beat the heat and grab a bite to eat.

The Boutique will also be open with a wide selection of made‐in‐Canada products available.

The Museum is open late this Friday, June 30, with free admission for all from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. The Museum is also open 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Monday, July 3.
