At this special event, you will have the opportunity to learn about the Witness Blanket, a monumental work of art created by Master Carver Carey Newman to honour survivors of residential schools. It is an opportunity to amplify the voices of those working hard to pursue truth and reconciliation and defend human rights for everyone.

Gala 2021: Raising Our Voices will feature Mr. Newman as the keynote speaker, alongside moving musical performances and personal testimonies from people across Canada including Shelagh Rogers, Don Amero, Paul Brandt, Tom Jackson, N’we Jinan youth artists, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and more!

Carey Newman (Hayalthkin’geme) is a multi‐disciplinary artist and master carver. Through his father he is Kwakwak’awakw from the Kukwekum, Giiksam, and WaWalaby’ie clans of Fort Rupert, and Coast Salish from Cheam of the Sto:lo Nation along the upper Fraser Valley. Through his mother he is English, Irish, and Scottish. His work can be seen around the world. In his artistic practice he strives to highlight Indigenous, social and environmental issues as he examines the impacts of colonialism.

Mr. Newman is the Impact Chair in Indigenous Art Practice at the University of Victoria and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in 2017. He was named to the Order of British Columbia in 2018.
